Joint base community members march to commemorate freedom

Rev. Craig D. Linton, Buffalo Soldiers Willingboro Chapter chaplain, speaks about the history of the Buffalo Soldiers Feb 21, 2013, at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. The JBSOC organized a march to commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation on JB MDL. The original members of the Army’s 10th Calvary Regiment formed Sept. 21, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The nickname Buffalo Soldiers was given to the "Negro Cavalry" by the Native-American tribes they fought. Buffalo Soldiers eventually became synonymous with all African-American regiments formed in 1866 which included the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments and the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments. Service members and volunteers offloads toys from “Fat Albert,” the Blue Angels’ C-130 Hercules, Dec. 3, 2012, at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. Fat Albert flew in with a cargo bay full of toys from the Marine Toys for Tots campaign. Toys R Us, Hasbro and Lockheed Martin were among the many contributors to the cargo that was intended for children in the tri-state area affected by Hurricane Sandy.
