Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst personnel have positioned all of its aircraft inside hangars or evacuated them to other installations in preparation for Hurricane Irene. Base members have secured all valuable materials inside buildings and hangars. An Emergency Operations Center has been set up to monitor the hurricane's path and manage actions pertaining to the severe weather prior to, during and following the hurricane. An emergency management crew will be dispatched, pending allowable conditions, to perform clean-up and an overall assessment of the damage around the installation. A U.S. Army UH-60 Blackhawk is the last to leave Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Aug. 27 in anticipation of Hurricane Irene's arrival. The Blackhawk and its crew transported soldiers from Fort Knox, Ky., to here, for training. The Blackhawk is the last helicopter to leave the installation. The crew, from the Clearwater Aviation Support Facility out of Clearwater, Fla., includes pilots Chief Warrant Officer 2 Travis Maus and 1st Lt. Damian Graham; and their crew chief, Staff Sgt. Tom Zawisza. All helicopters and aircraft have been positioned inside hangars or evacuated to other installations in preparation for Hurricane Irene. An F-35C test aircraft piloted by Lt. Christopher Tabert launches from a steam catapult for the first time at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst on July 27. CF-3 is the designated carrier suitability test aircraft. The F-35C carrier variant of the Joint Strike Fighter is distinct from the F-35A and F-35B variants with its larger wing surfaces and reinforced landing gear for greater control in the demanding carrier take-off and landing environment.
