COL Joseph E. Whitlock was assigned as the deputy commander of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. on July 6, 2011.

Colonel Whitlock was commissioned in 1986 as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers upon graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

He is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Army Force Management Course, the Army Command and General Staff College, the School of Advanced Military Studies, and the Army War College Senior Service College Fellowship at the University of Texas - Austin.

Colonel Whitlock most recently served as the executive officer to the Chief, Army Reserve/Commander, U.S. Army Reserve Command. He has also served as a strategic planner in the Joint Staff J5 and the Office of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. From 2002 to 2003, Colonel Whitlock served as a lead planner in the Coalition Forces Land Component Command while deployed to Kuwait and Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Colonel Whitlock has a Bachelor of Science degree from West Point. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School and Master of Military Art and Science degree in Theater Operations from the Command and General Staff College. His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Ranger tab, parachutist badge, as well as the Joint Staff and Army Staff identification badges.
